In order for a licensed practical nurse to work, he or she must be approved by the state's LPN Board of Nursing, which is created to define the practice of nursing in the state. Most of these boards of nursing have the power to act in all nursing matters except for those that relate to the training of registered nurses. The state's LPN Board of Nursing consists of both registered nurses as well as public board members. They are responsible for establishing standards as well as taking disciplinary action against licensed practical nurses who have disrupted the public health or welfare. All LPN Boards of Nursing are set up to monitor the activities of licensed practical nurses as well as set the standards for them to follow. A nurse must submit an application and get a license from the state's board of nursing before being able to practice nursing in that state.

Before being able to practice nursing in a state, a person must get a license from the board of nursing of that state. The standards may differ from state to state, but the main principles remain the same.
